Back Deck Renovations

I guess it's time for me to learn blogger since I got Alyssa to use it before she left in July. So here goes.

I though you might be interested in seeing some of the renovations we have been making in the last month and a bit. Let's start with the back deck.

The vinyl decking was leaking and wrecking my pathetic finishing job in my shop underneath, and so we decided to have it repaired in a way that will keep that from happening ever again - at least in my life time. How is that possible? Fiberglass.

Of course, before you can put on the new you have to remove the old and once you tart that there is often lots of other things that come up that you must do.

For instance, look at the horrible siding on the walls of the shop. Yuck! Ok, we'll replace that. But then how can that be done while still keeping water from the deck from pouring behind the new siding? Solution - expand the deck so there is an overhang.

Once I started peeling off the old railings and banging around things, creatures - sugar ants and carpenter ants - started appearing. This was especially true as I began tearing out the wet insulation and ceiling boards in the shop. Just remembering the mess and clutter of tearing out the shop so we could work in the ceiling brings back feelings of impatience to get things to where they are today - but I digress.

Long story short, Mark and Franklin Rae took on doubling the 2x8s, expanding the deck, and repairing a faulty expansion by a previous owner. Insted of patching the old deck's plywood, they ripped it all off and put down new 5/8 tongue and groove select (good on one side) plywood. Posted by Picasa
